Tuberculosis: Challenge of the 21st Century

On 23 March 2012 a conference entitled « Tuberculosis: Challenge of the 21st Century» was launched at Yerevan State Medical University. The University Council of Young Scientists had organised the conference jointly with the Youth Foundation of Armenia. Many honorary guests and university professors and physicians among them Prof. Mikayel Narimanyan, PhD, DSc, Vice Rector for Science; Mr. Karen Avagyan - Coordinator of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Foundation of Armenia; Karen Akopyan, the Head of Student Parliament, as well as university students attended the conference.

The audience was welcome by solemn opening speeches addressed by Mr. Mikayel Narimanyan and Narek Kamalyan – the Head of the Council of Young Scientists. Dr. Lubov Nikolayan (Republican Antituberculosis Dispensary) presented a report on the current issues with regard to the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis. Meanwhile, Mariam Movsisyan’s report – the Head of the Education-Methodical Committee of the University Student Parliament – was dedicated to the issue of tuberculosis in Armenia and beyond its borders. Khachatur Margaryan, the Head of International Affairs of the University Student Parliament presented a report detailing the role of student movements in the prevention of this disease.

Not to forget that March 24 is World Tuberculosis Day (TB), which commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis; the bacillus that causes tuberculosis, a leading cause of death from infectious disease worldwide. Since 1993 March 24 is recognized as the World TB Day. Every year, over 1.6 million people suffering from TB die throughout the whole world – the majority of them in developing countries.
