Exclusive Endovascular Brain Surgery for the First Time in Armenia

29.07.2014

Recently an exclusive surgery of removal of a thrombus from brain was held in the specialized center of neurosurgery and stroke treatment of the YSMU «Heratsi» N1 University Hospital. The surgery took place for the first time in Armenia.

Professor Rouben Fanarjyan was interviewed for details: «The patient was taken to the hospital with incranial aneurysm, in other words the diagnosis was dilated blood vessel of brain which is a very dangerous diseases and usually appears in the form of hemorrhaging in the earliest years. For the first time in Armenia such kind of surgeries took place in the above-mentioned center where around 200 people have been operated for the last 4 years.

In the case of the given patient atherosclerosis was found which is a separate disease characterized by vessels walls ulcer. However the surgery went well and the coming warning for hemorrhaging was prevented. After the surgery angiography is performed to be sure that the danger for aneurysm no more exists and the brain vessels are passable.

To the question what the results of vascular obstruction can be the Professor replied: «Such type of obstruction mainly leads to stroke the result of which normally is either death or unconsciousness. Fortunately at the present we have medicine «Aleteplaza» which can combat with the thrombus and restore brain supply. Question was raised regarding transportation of a stroke patient. The stroke treatment is more urgent than that of the myocardial infarction. Thus the only proper decision is to take the patient to the specialized stroke center. In addition it is worth mentioning that the below mentioned surgeries have first time taken place in the mentioned Center. Those are: endovascular treatment of brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation embolization, endovascular treatment of carotid cavernous fistula, removal of thrombus, carotid artery and cerebral arteries angioplasty, etc.
